حال

What it means

حال (hâl) means “mood,” “state,” or “condition.” Borrowed from Arabic ḥ-w-l (حال). It covers physical condition, emotional mood, and the present moment all at once.

It is the noun behind the most common Persian greeting and behind حال‌کردن (hâl-kardan), “to enjoy / to feel good.”

How to use it

• حالت چطوره؟ (hâlet chetore?) “How are you? (informal)”
• حالم خوبه (hâlam khube) “I’m fine, my mood is good”
• حالم بده (hâlam bade) “I feel bad / I’m not well”
• حال داری؟ (hâl dâri?) “Are you up for it? Do you have the energy?”

Cultural note

حال‌کردن is the slangy backbone of Tehrani enthusiasm. Teenagers say با این آهنگ حال می‌کنم (bâ in âhang hâl mikonam, “I’m vibing with this song”). The greeting حالت چطوره is so automatic that the literal answer rarely matters. The exchange itself is the courtesy.
