What it means
یکهو (yekho) means suddenly, all of a sudden, or out of nowhere. It is the colloquial spoken compression of یک هو (yek hav), where یک (yek) means one and هو (hav or hu) is an old Persian word for moment, breath, or instant. The standard literary equivalent is یکدفعه (yekdafe) or ناگهان (nâgahân), both meaning suddenly, but یکهو has a more vivid, informal quality that suits spoken narrative. It almost always signals something that surprised the speaker or came without warning. You will rarely see it in written prose but it is extremely common in storytelling, conversation, and daily speech.
How to use it
- یکهو برق رفت (yekho bargh raft) “All of a sudden the power went out.”
- یکهو افتاد و همه ترسیدن (yekho oftâdo hame tarsidan) “He suddenly fell and everyone got scared.”
- یکهو از پشت در اومد تو (yekho az posht-e dar umad tu) “She just appeared through the door out of nowhere.”
- یکهو گفت دیگه نمیاد (yekho goft dige nemiâd) “He suddenly said he is not coming anymore.”
Cultural note
Persian oral storytelling has a strong tradition of using vivid time-markers to pull the listener into the moment, and یکهو is one of the most useful tools for this. When an Iranian recounts an accident, a funny incident, or an unexpected piece of news, یکهو places the listener right at the turning point of the story. Its abruptness on the tongue, a single compressed syllable pair, mirrors the abruptness it describes. Formal equivalents like ناگهان carry the same meaning but would feel stiff and literary in the same telling.
