Tehran is the capital of taarof in modern Persian. The performance is most elaborate in middle-class and upper-middle-class Tehrani settings, where the dance of refusal can stretch through several rounds. Isfahanis and Shirazis are stereotyped (sometimes self-deprecatingly) as practicing taarof at an even higher intensity. Mashhadi and Tabrizi cultures keep most forms but are perceived as slightly more direct in commercial transactions. Diaspora communities in Los Angeles, Toronto, and London preserve taarof in family settings but drop it in professional contexts; second-generation Iranians often skip it entirely, which older relatives read as rude. Rural settings retain stronger and more obligatory forms.
