What it means
تعارف زدن (tâ’arof zadan) means “to perform tâ’arof, to offer politely, to insist with ritual courtesy.” Compound verb. B1 vocabulary. The active verbal form of the famous Iranian social ritual where one offers, refuses, then accepts (or both insist for many rounds).
How to use it
- تعارف نزن! (tâ’arof nazan!) “Stop being polite, really take it!”
- تعارف زد و رفت (tâ’arof zad-o raft) “He offered politely and left”
- قابل ندارد، تعارف میزنم (qâbel nadârad, tâ’arof mizanam) “It is unworthy of you, I am offering politely”
Common pairings
- تعارف (tâ’arof) “the ritual courtesy itself”
- قابل ندارد (qâbel nadârad) “it is unworthy of you” (classic tâ’arof line)
- قابلی نداره (qâbeli nadâre) “no need, it is nothing” (refusing payment)
- تعارف کردن (tâ’arof kardan) “to offer politely” (also valid, slightly more formal)
Compound verb structure
A زدن (zadan, “to strike, do”) compound: تعارف (the noun, “ritual courtesy”) + زدن. The زدن variant carries a more dynamic, performance-based sense than تعارف کردن (kardan). Conjugates by inflecting زدن, تعارف میزنم (tâ’arof mizanam, “I do tâ’arof”), تعارف زدم (tâ’arof zadam, “I did tâ’arof”). The phrase تعارف نکن (tâ’arof nakon, “do not perform tâ’arof”) is a way of saying “be honest with me, drop the courtesy.”
