What it means
سیو کردن (save-kardan) means to save, to bookmark, to store digitally. Iranians سیو میکنند a contact in their phone, a recipe on Instagram, a clip from Telegram, a document on a laptop. The verb stretches across every device-level save action and quietly replaced the older Persian options.
The Pure Persian Movement and formal-Persian alternatives are ذخیره کردن (zakhireh-kardan, to store, to stockpile, Arabic root) and نگه داشتن (negah dāshtan, to keep, native Persian). Both still appear on system UI in Farsi locales. In speech, when someone asks you to save their number, they say سیو کن, not ذخیره کن. The former feels lighter and fits the small, instant action.
Compound verb structure
Save-kardan is built on the dominant Persian pattern: English noun سیو plus light verb کردن (kardan). The action is durative, not a single-strike gesture, so کردن fits rather than زدن.
- Present: من سیو میکنم (man save mikonam), تو سیو میکنی (to save mikoni)
- Past: من سیو کردم (man save kardam)
- Subjunctive: که سیو کنم (ke save konam)
- Negation: سیو نکردم (save nakardam)
- Passive: سیو شد (save shod, it was saved)
Direct objects mark with را or رو: شمارهام رو سیو کن (shomāre-am ro save kon, save my number).

shomāre-am rā save kon, lāzem mishe.
Save my number, you’ll need it.
شمارهام را سیو کن، لازم میشه.
in post rā save kardam ke ba’dan dorost konam.
I saved this post to make the recipe later.
این پست را سیو کردم که بعدا درست کنم.
fāyel rā save nakardam, hame chiz az dast raft.
I didn’t save the file, everything was lost.
فایل را سیو نکردم، همه چیز از دست رفت.
The Instagram bookmark angle
On Instagram, save-kardan has taken on a specific meaning: tapping the bookmark icon to add a post to a private collection. Iranians use the action constantly because Instagram is the de facto recipe app, the de facto Pinterest, the de facto everything-saved-for-later folder. سیوش کردم (save-esh kardam, I saved it) appears under cooking reels, fashion posts, study tips, anything a user might come back to. The verb is so naturalized that even older speakers say it without code-switch awareness.
Where it comes from
Save is English, imported through computer interfaces in the 1990s and amplified by smartphone UI in the 2010s. کردن is native Persian. Modern Iranian internet speech runs on this compound formula, and سیو کردن is one of the earliest and most thoroughly assimilated examples.
