What it means
ذخیره (zakhire) is borrowed from Arabic ذَخِيرة, which originally meant a reserve, a store of supplies, or treasure kept for future use. In modern Persian it carries that core sense of setting something aside safely, and has become the standard word for saving or storing digital data. The verb form ذخیره کردن (zakhire kardan) means “to save” a file or “to store” information. A related noun is ذخیرهسازی (zakhire-sazi), meaning data storage as a concept or process.

- فایل رو ذخیره کن قبل از بستن. (Fayl ro zakhire kon qabl az bastan.) “Save the file before closing.”
- اطلاعاتم رو توی ابر ذخیره میکنم. (Ettelaa’atam ro tu-ye abr zakhire mikonam.) “I store my data in the cloud.”
- این برنامه خودش ذخیره میکنه. (In barnameye khodesh zakhire mikone.) “This app saves automatically.”
- جا برای ذخیرهسازی نداریم. (Ja baraye zakhire-sazi nadarim.) “We don’t have space for storage.”
Cultural note
The Arabic root ذ-خ-ر (dh-kh-r) carries a meaning of storing and treasuring, and entered Persian centuries before the digital age, appearing in classical texts in the sense of provisions and reserves. Its adoption as the computing term for “save” was a natural fit, chosen by Persian technology writers in the 1990s and early 2000s as Iran’s IT sector developed. It is now so firmly established that even very young Persian speakers use ذخیره کردن without awareness of its Arabic origin.
