لابد

What it means

لابد (lâbod) is an adverb expressing confident inference or resigned certainty. The word comes from Arabic لَا بُدَّ (lâ budda), a fixed Arabic expression meaning there is no escape from it or it is unavoidable. In Arabic, لَا is the negation particle and بُدّ (budd) means alternative or escape. The compound meant inevitably or certainly. Persian borrowed this as a single adverb and softened its meaning slightly into the realm of I suppose, I imagine, or it must be that. A sentence with لابد means the speaker is drawing a confident logical conclusion from available evidence. لابد خسته بودی (lâbod khaste budi) means you must have been tired, said by someone who is inferring tiredness from behavior rather than being told directly.

How to use it

• لابد دیروقت خوابیدی. (lâbod dirvaght khâbidi.) “You must have gone to bed late.”
• لابد فراموش کرده. (lâbod farâmush karde.) “She has probably forgotten.”
• این همه خوردی، لابد گرسنه بودی. (in hame khordi, lâbod gorosne budi.) “You ate so much, you must have been hungry.”
• لابد میدونه، بپرسش. (lâbod midune, beparesash.) “He probably knows, ask him.”

Cultural note

لابد is a window into the Persian habit of reasoning out loud about other people’s inner states. Where English might require a hedge like I guess or I imagine, Persian uses لابد to assert an inference with a confident but non-confrontational tone. It assumes the speaker knows enough about the situation to draw a reasonable conclusion, without claiming certain knowledge. This makes it particularly useful in expressing empathy: لابد خسته‌ای (lâbod khaste’i, you must be tired) is both an observation and an acknowledgment. The word sits slightly on the colloquial side and feels natural in relaxed conversation rather than formal writing.
