What it means
گم (gom) means lost, missing, or gone astray. On its own it works as a predicate adjective: چیزم گمه (my thing is lost). Combined with light verbs it generates the two most important compound verbs built on this stem: گم شدن (gom shodan), meaning to get lost or to go missing, and گم کردن (gom kardan), meaning to lose something. A blunter usage is گم شو (gom sho), literally get lost, used as an insult meaning get out of my sight or go away. The adjective گم also appears in compounds like گمشده (gomshodeh, the missing one or a lost person) and گمراه (gomrâh, astray, literally on a lost road), the latter carrying moral and spiritual connotations in Persian literature.
How to use it
- گوشیم رو گم کردم (gushim ro gom kardam) “I lost my phone.”
- تو کوچهها گم شدم (tu kuchehâ gom shodam) “I got lost in the alleys.”
- کیفم گمه (kifam gome) “My bag is missing.”
- گم شو برو (gom sho boro) “Get lost, go away.” (rude dismissal)
Cultural note
The word گمراه (gomrâh, astray) appears throughout classical Persian poetry, particularly in Sufi literature, where being spiritually lost and then found is a central metaphor for the human journey toward the divine. Poets like Hafez and Rumi use گم and its derivatives to describe the soul wandering before it finds the path back to its source. In contemporary Iranian speech the same root lands in the completely mundane context of losing your keys or missing your bus stop, but the literary resonance of گم as a spiritual condition is never far beneath the surface for educated Iranians.
