What it means

گشتن (gashtan) covers a cluster of meanings that revolve around movement through a space or systematic searching of a space. To wander through a bazaar, to roam around a neighborhood, to patrol a street, to search for a lost object: all of these can be expressed with gashtan depending on context. The formal and written equivalent is گردیدن (gardidan) or چرخیدن (charkhidan) for aimless circling, and جستجو کردن (jostoju kardan) for deliberate searching, but in spoken Persian gashtan handles all of these naturally. The key phrase گشتن دنبال چیزی (gashtan donbâl-e chizi) means to look for something, to hunt it down, to be on the search. گشتم پیداش نکردم (gashtam peydâsh nakardam) is a complete, natural sentence meaning I searched but could not find it.

Cultural note

The word گشت (gasht), the noun derived from gashtan, is used for a patrol unit, most familiarly in گشت ارشاد (gasht-e ershâd), the morality patrol units that operated in Iranian cities to enforce dress and behavior codes. The word became widely known outside Iran through news coverage and social protest. This means that gashtan and its noun gasht carry different emotional registers depending on context: wandering through a market is warm and leisurely, while gasht alone in public discourse carries a sharper political weight.
