What it means
چرخیدن (charkhidan) means “to turn,” “to spin,” “to revolve,” or “to wander around.” It is formed from چرخ (charkh), the Persian word for “wheel,” which itself goes back through Middle Persian to the Avestan word for wheel, a cognate of Sanskrit cakra. The verb is fully native to the language. Beyond literal rotation, charkhidan is used in spoken Persian to describe aimless wandering, as in چرخیدن تو بازار (charkhidan tu bâzâr, wandering around the market). A transitive variant is چرخاندن (charkhândan, to turn something, to spin something).

- زمین دور خورشید میچرخه. (zamin dore khorshid mi-charkhe.) “The Earth revolves around the Sun.”
- سرم داره میچرخه. (saram dâre mi-charkhe.) “My head is spinning.”
- یه کم تو مرکز چرخیدیم. (ye kam tu markaz charkhidim.) “We wandered around the city centre for a bit.”
- این چرخ نمیچرخه. (in charkh nemi-charkhe.) “This wheel isn’t turning.”
Cultural note
The root چرخ (charkh) appears across Persian culture, from the spinning wheel used in textile traditions to the philosophical image of چرخ فلک (charkh-e falak), the wheel of fortune or celestial sphere, a recurring metaphor in classical poetry by poets such as Hafez. In colloquial modern Persian, بریم یه چرخی بزنیم (berim ye charkhi bezanim, let’s go for a spin or wander around) is an extremely common casual invitation to go out without a fixed destination.
