What it means
گرده (garde) means pollen: the fine, powdery substance produced by flowers that fertilizes other plants. The word comes from the Persian root گرد (gard), meaning dust, powder, or fine particles, making it a fully native word whose meaning is transparent from its form. In modern Iran, گرده is used both in botanical and scientific contexts and in everyday conversation, particularly when talking about spring allergies. A common phrase is حساسیت به گرده (hassâsiyyat be garde), meaning pollen allergy.
How to use it
- گردهی گلها تو هواست. (garde-ye gol-hâ tu havâst.) “Flower pollen is in the air.”
- زنبورها گرده جمع میکنن. (zanbur-hâ garde jam mikonan.) “Bees collect pollen.”
- حساسیت به گرده دارم. (hassâsiyyat be garde dâram.) “I have a pollen allergy.”
- گردهی زرد رو لباسم بود. (garde-ye zard ru lebâsam bud.) “There was yellow pollen on my clothes.”
Cultural note
Spring in Iran, especially during Nowruz, brings a surge in airborne گرده from fruit trees and wildflowers. Pollen allergies (حساسیت به گرده) have become a widely discussed seasonal health topic in Iran, with news reports regularly covering pollen counts in major cities. Beekeeping is also a significant agricultural tradition in Iran, and the role of bees in collecting گرده is well understood in rural communities.
