What it means
داستان (dâstân) is one of the oldest and most central words in Persian for any kind of story, tale, or narrative. Unlike رمان (român), which is a loanword from French and means specifically a novel, داستان is a native Persian word with roots going back to classical literature. It can describe a short story, a folk tale, a legend, or even an episode in everyday speech. The compound داستان کوتاه (dâstân-e kutâh) is the standard term for a short story in literary contexts.
How to use it
- یه داستان جالب برام تعریف کن. (ye dâstân-e jâleb barâm ta’rif kon.) “Tell me an interesting story.”
- داستان این فیلم خیلی قویه. (dâstân-e in film kheili qaviye.) “The story of this film is very strong.”
- این داستان از واقعیت الهام گرفته. (in dâstân az vâge’iyyat elhâm gerefte.) “This story is inspired by real events.”
- داستانهای کودکانه رو دوست دارم. (dâstân-hâ-ye kudakâne ro dust dâram.) “I love children’s stories.”
Cultural note
داستان appears throughout classical Persian poetry and prose, including in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, which contains many celebrated narrative episodes. The word carries a dignified literary heritage while remaining completely natural in everyday speech. Modern Persian short-story writing flourished in the twentieth century alongside the novel, with writers such as Sadegh Chubak and Jalal Al-e Ahmad establishing a strong داستان کوتاه tradition.
