What it means
امشب (emshab) means tonight or this evening. It is a pure Persian compound formed from the demonstrative ام/این (am/in, this) and شب (shab, night), so literally “this night.” The word is completely regular in usage: it is a time adverb that fixes a statement in the current evening without any added nuance. Its close set includes دیشب (dishab, last night), فردا شب (fardâ shab, tomorrow night), and امروز (emruz, today). In spoken Persian emshab is common at every level of formality; there is no formal or literary alternative because the word already feels neutral and clean. Evening and night blur somewhat in Persian timing: emshab can cover the dinner hour as easily as midnight.
How to use it
- امشب چیکار داری؟ (emshab chikâr dâri?) “What are you up to tonight?”
- امشب نمیتونم (emshab nemitunam) “I can’t tonight.”
- امشب بارون میاد (emshab bârun miyâd) “It is going to rain tonight.”
- امشب با هم شام بخوریم (emshab bâ ham shâm bekhorim) “Let’s have dinner together tonight.”
Cultural note
امشب is one of those building-block time words that makes Persian feel accessible early on. Alongside امروز (today), فردا (tomorrow), and دیروز (yesterday), emshab slots into the small core vocabulary that learners start using in their first real conversations. Evening plans, dinner invitations, and social check-ins in Persian almost always include emshab. The word also appears constantly in song, poetry, and storytelling where the night is a charged time, giving it a light poetic resonance beyond its everyday function.
