What it means
یواش (yavâsh) means slow, slowly, gently, or quietly. The word is borrowed directly from Turkish yavaş, meaning slow or gentle, and entered Persian through the long centuries of Turkic cultural influence in Iran. In colloquial speech یواش is the go-to word for telling someone to slow down, lower their voice, or act more carefully. It functions as both an adverb modifying a verb (رانندگی کن یواش, drive slowly) and as an adjective (اون آدم یواشه, that person is slow). The reduplicated form یواش یواش (yavâsh yavâsh) means very slowly, little by little, or gradually and is extremely common in describing incremental progress.
How to use it
- یواشتر برو (yavâshtar bero) “Go slower.”
- یواش صحبت کن (yavâsh sohbat kon) “Speak quietly.”
- یواش یواش داره بهتر میشه (yavâsh yavâsh dâre behtar mishe) “It’s gradually getting better.”
- یواش باش نیفتی (yavâsh bâsh nayofti) “Be careful / go slowly so you don’t fall.”
Cultural note
Persian has absorbed a substantial number of Turkish loanwords over many centuries, particularly in areas of everyday life, and یواش is among the most thoroughly naturalized. It appears in children’s songs, folk sayings, and everyday speech across all age groups without any sense of being foreign. The phrase یواش یواش also appears in parenting and mentoring contexts to encourage patience: یواش یواش یاد میگیری (yavâsh yavâsh yâd migiri) means “you will learn little by little” and is a common reassurance offered to learners and beginners.
