What it means

یالا (yallâ) is an interjection used to urge movement, express impatience, or rally people into action. Its meaning overlaps with come on, let’s go, get moving, or hurry up in English. The word entered Persian from Arabic, where يَالَّا (ya allâh) is a contraction of يَا اللّٰه (ya allâh, O God) used as an urging call. Through colloquial use across the Arabic-speaking world and into Persian-speaking regions, it was trimmed and naturalized as یالا, losing its explicit religious content and functioning purely as an energetic prompt. It belongs firmly to the colloquial register and would sound out of place in formal or written Persian. A rougher synonym with similar meaning is بدو (bodo, run or hurry), but یالا is used for situations requiring collective movement or group encouragement rather than pure speed.

How to use it

• یالا، دیر شد (yallâ, dir shod) “Come on, we’re late” (urging someone to move faster).
• یالا بریم، منتظرن (yallâ berim, montazeran) “Let’s go, they are waiting for us.”
• یالا دیگه، چرا وایستادی؟ (yallâ dige, cherâ vâistâdi?) “Come on now, why have you stopped?”
• یالا یالا، بار میزنیم (yallâ yallâ, bâr mizanim) “Let’s go let’s go, we are loading up” (said when starting an energetic task).

Cultural note

یالا is the kind of word that crosses linguistic borders without ceremony. It is used in informal Persian in Iran as well as in Persian-speaking communities across the diaspora, and its energetic feel translates well because it is not specifically linked to a cultural ritual or formal context. It thrives in sports, family outings, group activities, and any moment where someone needs to get everyone moving. Recognizing it immediately marks spoken Persian as dynamic and socially real, rather than the stiff register of textbook dialogues.
