والله

What it means

والله (vallâh) is an interjection built on the Arabic وَاللّه (wa-llâh), literally by God. In Persian it has drifted well beyond a religious oath and now covers a range of spoken registers. It can signal genuine sincerity, as in I honestly do not know, or mild exasperation, as in what can I say, it is what it is. Sometimes it functions as a filler that buys the speaker a moment to think. A common variant is بالله (ballâh), and in faster colloquial speech you may hear valla flattened even further. The word is not considered profane; it is high-frequency informal speech across all age groups and regions of Iran.

How to use it

• والله نمی‌دونم (vallâh nemi-dunam) “Honestly, I have no idea.”
• والله خودمم خسته شدم (vallâh khodam-am khaste shodam) “By God, I am tired of it too.”
• والله چی بگم؟ (vallâh chi begam?) “What can I say? I really do not know.”
• والله آدم خوبیه (vallâh âdam-e khubi-ye) “Honestly, he is a good person.”

Cultural note

In Iranian conversation, والله is one of several God-invoking fillers that pepper everyday speech alongside ان‌شاءالله (enshâ-llâh, if God wills), ماشاءالله (mâshâ-llâh, what God has willed), and خدا رو شکر (khodâ ro shokr, thank God). These are not primarily religious statements in most casual contexts but are pragmatic markers that Iranians use to soften claims, express uncertainty, or signal emotional honesty. A foreigner who drops a natural-sounding والله at the right moment earns an immediate smile of recognition.
