What it means

الله (allâh) is the Arabic name of God in Islam, used in Persian for Islamic religious contexts, prayers, and formal devotional speech. A1 vocabulary, sacred register. Distinct from the everyday Persian word خدا (khodâ), though for Iranian Muslims they refer to the same God.

How to use it

  • بسم الله (besm-ellâh) “in the name of God”
  • الحمد لله (al-hamd-o-lellâh) “praise be to God”
  • ان شاء الله (en-shâ’-allâh) “if God wills” (very common Persian word, “hopefully”)

Common pairings

  • یا الله (yâ allâh) “O God” (also used as a polite “may I enter?”)
  • اللهم (allâhomma) “O God” (formal prayer opening)
  • الحمد لله (al-hamd-o-lellâh) “thanks be to God”
  • الله اکبر (allâh-o-akbar) “God is greatest”
  • خدا (khodâ) “God” (Pure Persian, everyday word)

Religious context

From Arabic الله (Allāh), a contraction of al-ilāh (“the god, the deity”). Used in Quranic recitation, the شهادتین (shahâdatayn, declarations of faith), and the daily ritual prayers (نماز, namâz). In casual Iranian speech, خدا dominates, Iranians say خدا حافظ (khodâ hâfez, “God protect, goodbye”) not الله حافظ. The phrase ان شاء الله (en-shâ’-allâh) is the most ubiquitous everyday use of الله, deployed for any future plan: “tomorrow we will go, en-shâ’-allâh.”
