دیام (di-em) is the Persianized pronunciation of the English initialism DM, short for “direct message.” It refers to a private message sent through a social media platform, as opposed to a public comment or post. The word is used as both a noun and a verb in spoken Persian: you can «دیام دادن» (di-em dâdan, “to DM someone”) or receive a «دیام» (di-em). The native Persian equivalent is پیام مستقیم (payâm-e mostaqim) or پیام خصوصی (payâm-e khosusi), but in informal speech, especially among younger Iranians, دیام is universally preferred.
