شلام

What it means

شلام (shalam) is a playful, baby-talk slurring of سلام (salâm, hello), with the s turning to sh. It is the cutesy “hewwo” of Persian: used in affectionate or childish speech, and famously in Milad Gholami’s 2024 song شلام, where the singer says shalam instead of salâm because his tongue is tangled.

How to use it

• شلام، خوبی؟ (shalam, khubi?) “Hewwo, you good?”
• از فرط مستی جای سلام گفت شلام (az fart-e masti jâ-ye salâm goft shalam) “So drunk he said shalam instead of salâm.”
• a cutesy text greeting between close friends.

Cultural note

Part of a playful speech register that softens words (سلام to شلام, قربونت برم to قربونت بلم). Not a standard greeting, just an affectionate distortion.
