The full phrase is Arabic: as-salâmu ʾalaykum, the standard Muslim greeting across the Islamic world. It comes from the Quran and is part of the social etiquette taught in hadith literature: that a Muslim should greet another Muslim with peace, and that the reply should be equal or better.
