What it means
مقاله (maqāleh) is the Persian word for an article, a paper, a written piece intended for publication. The same word covers a newspaper op-ed in Sharq, a feature in Etemad, a peer-reviewed paper in an academic journal, and a long-form essay in a literary magazine. Persian does not split these into separate terms the way English distinguishes article, paper, essay, and piece; مقاله handles them all and context tells you which kind you are reading.
The neighboring words narrow the field. سرمقاله (sar-maqāleh) is specifically an editorial. یادداشت (yāddāsht) is a shorter, more personal column. گزارش (gozāresh) is a reported piece. مقاله sits in the middle as the general workhorse term.
How to use it
Maqāleh takes ezafe phrases freely: مقاله علمی (maqāleh-ye elmi, scientific article), مقاله تحلیلی (maqāleh-ye tahlili, analytical article), مقاله انتقادی (maqāleh-ye enteqādi, critical article). It pairs with verbs like نوشتن (neveshtan, to write), منتشر کردن (montasher kardan, to publish), and خواندن (khāndan, to read).

Where it comes from
Maqāleh is Arabic, the noun of place or instance from the form I verb قال (qāla, to say, speak), through the pattern maC1C2aC3a (مفعله), which forms place nouns and abstract action nouns. Literally the word means a saying, an utterance, a thing said in writing. The same root q-w-l (قول) gives Persian قول (qowl, promise, word given), مقاله (maqāleh, article), and Arabic gives the broader family of speaking-related vocabulary. Persian absorbed مقاله in the medieval period through Arabic scholarly writing, and the modern sense, a published article in a newspaper or journal, settled in during the nineteenth century with the birth of the Iranian press.
In our voice
Iranian newspaper culture is built on مقاله. The serious dailies (Sharq, Etemad, Hammihan, Donya-e Eqtesad) publish dozens every day, and the line between a newspaper مقاله and a magazine essay is thin. If you want to read educated Persian, you read مقاله. The word is one of the cleanest A2 entries into adult intellectual vocabulary, because it scales: the same word works for a 500-word column and a 30-page academic paper.
