What it means

نشریه (nashriyeh) is the Persian word for a periodical, a publication, anything published on a recurring schedule. The term is wide. It covers a weekly news magazine, a monthly literary journal, a quarterly academic journal, a university bulletin, and the in-house newsletter of a professional association. If it comes out on a schedule and prints text, it can be a nashriyeh.

The narrower words pin down specific formats. روزنامه (ruzname) is a daily newspaper. مجله (majalleh) is a magazine, usually monthly or weekly, often glossy and consumer-facing. فصل‌نامه (fasl-nameh) is a quarterly journal. ماهنامه (mah-nameh) is a monthly. نشریه is the umbrella, the institutional category that contains all of them.

How to use it

Nashriyeh takes ezafe constructions naming the type or topic: نشریه ادبی (nashriyeh-ye adabi, literary periodical), نشریه دانشجویی (nashriyeh-ye dāneshjui, student publication), نشریه علمی (nashriyeh-ye elmi, scientific journal), نشریه تخصصی (nashriyeh-ye takhassosi, specialized periodical).

in nashriyeh-ye adabi har māh montasher mishavad.

This literary periodical is published every month.

این نشریه ادبی هر ماه منتشر می‌شود.

vezārat-e ershād majavvez-e in nashriyeh rā lagho kard.

Where it comes from

Nashriyeh is Arabic, the feminine of the adjectival noun نشری (nashri, related to publishing), built from the root n-sh-r (نشر, with the core sense of spreading, scattering, unfolding, publishing). The same root gives نشر (nashr, publication, the act of publishing), منتشر (montasher, published), and ناشر (nāsher, publisher). The form pattern نشری plus the feminine ending ـه (-eh) creates a noun naming a thing-that-is-published. Persian absorbed نشریه in the early twentieth century as the press grew and needed an umbrella term for non-daily publications.

In our voice

Iranian intellectual life runs on نشریه. The literary magazines (کارنامه, کلک, بخارا), the social-science journals, the policy quarterlies, the university student publications that periodically get shut down by the Ministry of Guidance, all are نشریه. The word also carries a faint institutional weight because publishing a نشریه in Iran requires a license (مجوز, majavvez), and licenses can be revoked. So calling something a نشریه marks it as something that went through the formal permit process, not a casual zine. The distinction matters in Iranian press history.
