مطالعه کردن

What it means

مطالعه کردن (motaleʿe-kardan) means to study, to read deeply, to work through a text with attention. It is the verb every Iranian student knows from primary school onward and one of the first compound verbs in the “books and learning” cluster a Persian learner should own.

The lighter sibling is خواندن (khāndan, to read), which covers anything readable. مطالعه کردن narrows that to focused, purposeful reading. You خواندن the menu at a restaurant; you مطالعه می‌کنی for a chemistry exam.

Compound verb structure

مطالعه کردن follows the standard Persian compound-verb pattern: an Arabic-origin noun (مطالعه, motaleʿe) plus the native Persian light verb کردن (kardan, to do). The noun stays invariant; کردن carries all conjugation. This is the same pattern as صحبت کردن (sohbat-kardan, to talk), تحقیق کردن (tahghigh-kardan, to research), and hundreds of others.

• Present: من مطالعه می‌کنم (man motaleʿe mikonam), تو مطالعه می‌کنی (to motaleʿe mikoni), او مطالعه می‌کند (u motaleʿe mikonad)
• Past: من مطالعه کردم (man motaleʿe kardam), تو مطالعه کردی (to motaleʿe kardi), او مطالعه کرد (u motaleʿe kard)
• Subjunctive: که مطالعه کنم (ke motaleʿe konam)
• Negation: مطالعه نکردم (motaleʿe nakardam, I did not study)
• Imperative: مطالعه کن (motaleʿe kon, study!)

Objects attach with را (rā) in formal speech, with the colloquial رو (ro) in everyday speech.

Where it comes from

The noun مطالعه (motaleʿe) is Arabic, from the root t-l-ʿ (طلع, to rise, look up at, examine), through the form III verbal noun pattern. Kardan is the native Persian general-purpose light verb. The two have been grafted together in Persian for centuries to handle scholarly action in everyday syntax.

If you spend any time around Iranian students, parents, or teachers, مطالعه کردن will appear in every other sentence. It is one of those verbs whose frequency is so high that not knowing it shuts you out of a whole stream of normal life. Drill it early.
