What it means

مگه (mage) is a colloquial particle used to question an assumption, express disbelief, or add rhetorical force to a question. It is the spoken reduction of مگر (magar), a conjunction and particle with a long history in Persian that carries a range of meanings: unless, except, or is it that. In colloquial use, مگه softens or sharpens questions depending on intonation. Said with a rising tone, مگه نگفتم؟ (mage nagoftam?, didn’t I say so?) is a mild rhetorical challenge. Said with a falling tone, مگه میشه؟ (mage mishe?) expresses genuine surprise: really, is that possible? It can also introduce a condition: مگه اینکه (mage inke, unless). The word belongs firmly to spoken colloquial Persian and would be replaced by مگر (magar) in formal written contexts.

Cultural note

مگه is one of the particles that immediately marks speech as natural colloquial Persian rather than formal or textbook Farsi. Its tone varies enormously with context: between close friends it can be warm and teasing, while in a tense argument it can carry a sharp edge of challenge or reproach. Heritage learners who grow up hearing Persian at home often absorb مگه naturally, while classroom learners frequently encounter it late because coursebooks tend to focus on مگر in its formal written role. Paying attention to how مگه shifts meaning with intonation is one of the more rewarding listening exercises for intermediate learners.
