What it means
آره (âre) means “yes” in casual, spoken Persian. It is the informal counterpart to بله (bale), the polite or formal “yes.” Choosing between them is one of the first register decisions a learner makes in any conversation.
How to use it
- آره، میدونم (âre, midunam) “yeah, I know”
- آره بابا (âre bâbâ) “yeah, of course” (very casual)
- آره، حتماً (âre, hatman) “yes, definitely”
- آره دیگه (âre dige) “yeah, exactly”
Position in sentence
Âre almost always sits at the very start of a reply, often followed by a comma or a small pause before the rest of the sentence. It can also stand alone as a complete answer. You can stretch the vowel for emphasis, آرههه (âreee), to mean “yeah, totally,” or shorten it to a clipped آره for a flat, neutral confirmation.
Cultural note
Âre belongs to the same casual world as داره, خونه, and اگه. Use it with classmates, siblings, close colleagues, anyone you would address with تو (to). Aim it at an elder or a stranger and you’ll sound rude. The fix is automatic for Iranians: family gets âre, the bank teller gets bale.
