KHOO-bam
I'm good
A1 — Absolute Beginner
What it means
خوبم (khubam) means “I’m good” or “I’m fine.” It is the standard reply to چطوری (chetori, “how are you?”).
Built from خوب (khub, “good”) + ـم (-am, the 1sg “to be” suffix).
How to use it
- ممنون، خوبم (mamnun, khubam) “Thanks, I’m good”
- خوبم، تو چطوری؟ (khubam, to chetori?) “I’m fine, you?”
- بد نیستم، خوبم (bad nistam, khubam) “I’m not bad, I’m good”
How it’s built
Adjective + clitic copula:
- خوب (khub) “good” (adjective)
- ـم (-am) “I am” (1sg of بودن, budan)
- Together: خوبم “I am good”
- Same pattern for other persons: خوبی (khubi, you are good), خوبه (khube, he/she/it is good).
Cultural note
Iranians reply خوبم even when they aren’t, the way English speakers say “fine.” The follow-up شما خوبید؟ (shomâ khubid?) is near-mandatory politeness, not real curiosity. Skipping it sounds curt. Adding مرسی or ممنون before khubam softens the whole exchange. In a long-time friend’s call, خوبم gets stretched to خوبممم and then real news follows.
