What it means
جدا (jodâ) is a pure Persian word meaning separate, apart, or distinct. As an adjective it describes things that are not together: زندگی جدا (zendegi-ye jodâ) means a separate life. As an adverb it means apart or separately: جدا نگه دار (jodâ negah dâr) means keep them apart. In everyday spoken Persian جدا also functions as an intensifier or sincerity marker, very close to English “honestly” or “I mean it”: جدا؟ means really? and جدا میگم means I am honestly saying this. The verb جدا شدن (jodâ shodan) covers separation in every sense, from two objects coming apart to a couple breaking up or a family member moving away.
How to use it
- جدا زندگی میکنیم (jodâ zendegi mikonim) “We live separately.”
- جدا شدن سخته (jodâ shodan sakhte) “Separating is hard.”
- جدا؟ چرا نگفتی؟ (jodâ? cherâ nagofti?) “Really? Why didn’t you tell me?”
- این دوتا رو جدا کن (in dotâ ro jodâ kon) “Separate these two.”
Cultural note
The colloquial use of جدا as a sincerity booster is widespread in modern Iranian speech, especially among younger speakers. You might hear a friend say جدا دوستت دارم (jodâ dustat dâram) to mean “I genuinely like you,” where جدا functions like “honestly” or “for real.” This usage makes جدا one of those compact words that carries different weight depending on whether it comes before a verb (honestly) or after a noun (separate). Listening for the position of جدا in a sentence is a small but real marker of Persian fluency.
