What it means

جا (jâ) means place, spot, location, or room in the sense of available space. It is one of the most productive nouns in Persian, appearing in compound verbs, adverbial phrases, and idioms across every register. As a standalone noun: جا نیست (jâ nist), “there is no room.” As part of compound verbs: جا دادن (jâ dâdan) means to fit something in or to accommodate; جا داشتن (jâ dâshtan) means to have space or to fit; and the vivid جا خوردن (jâ khordan), literally “to eat place,” means to be startled or taken aback. In adverbial phrases it appears in همه جا (hame jâ), everywhere; هیچ جا (hich jâ), nowhere; and اینجا, آنجا, اونجا for here and there. The word is also the second element of جابجا (jâ-be-jâ), meaning displaced or moved from its place.

How to use it

• جا نیست، نمیشه نشست (jâ nist, nemishe neshast) “There’s no room, you can’t sit down.”
• وسایلت رو از جاشون تکون نده (vasâyel-et ro az jâ-shun tekun nade) “Don’t move your things from their spots.”
• جا خوردم وقتی دیدمش (jâ khordam vaghti didam-ash) “I was startled when I saw him.”
• همه جا دنبالت گشتم (hame jâ donbâl-et gashtam) “I looked for you everywhere.”

Cultural note

جا خوردن, to be startled or shocked, is worth learning as a set phrase because it is so common in spoken Persian that it functions almost like a single word. Iranians reach for it whenever something surprises or unsettles them. The phrase جا داره which literally means “it has a place” is used to acknowledge that something is understandable or justified: جا داره ناراحت باشه (jâ dâre nârâhat bâshe), “It makes sense that he is upset.” These compound uses of جا make it one of the highest-frequency nouns in the language.
