What it means
حواس (havâs) is a plural Arabic form from the root ح-س-س (h-s-s), but in Persian it functions as a singular noun covering a cluster of meanings: the five senses as a collective faculty, one’s attention, and the general state of mental alertness. A person whose حواس is intact is present, switched on, and aware of what is happening around them. When it is absent, they are distracted, absent-minded, or oblivious. Persian uses the word in both literal sensory contexts (the senses of hearing, sight, touch, etc.) and the more figurative everyday sense of paying attention. The colloquial phrase حواسم نیست is one of the most useful A-level expressions to know: it means “I’m not paying attention” or “I didn’t notice,” with no blame attached. حواست جمع باشه is a stronger, more directive phrase meaning “keep your wits about you” or “stay sharp” and is used by parents, coaches, or anyone warning another person to stay focused.
How to use it
- حواسم نبود، ببخشید (havâsam nabud, bebakhshid) “Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.”
- حواست جمع باشه سر کار (havâset jam’ bâshe sar-e kâr) “Stay sharp at work.”
- حواسم پیش تو بود (havâsam pish-e to bud) “My mind was on you.”
- حواس پنجگانه (havâs-e panjgâne) “The five senses.”
Cultural note
The phrase حواست جمع باشه is a staple of Iranian parenting and coaching culture. It carries the idea that your mental faculties should be gathered and unified rather than scattered. The opposite, حواسپرتی (havâs-parakandegi or colloquially havâs-parti), meaning absent-mindedness or distraction, is something Iranian teachers complain about in report cards and something Iranian mothers invoke when a child drops something or forgets an errand. Being fully present and alert is a social virtue in Persian culture, and حواسم بود (havâsam bud) can function almost as an assurance of attentiveness in conversation.
