HAMCHENIN
also / likewise
B1 — Intermediate

What it means

همچنین (hamchenin) means “also,” “likewise,” or “in the same way” in formal Persian. Both components are native Persian: هم (ham, “also/too”) and چنین (chenin, “such/like this”). Together they form an adverb that introduces a parallel statement or adds a point to something already said. Its closest colloquial equivalent is همینطور (hamintor), and its more literary synonym is نیز (niz). You will find همچنین in formal emails, academic papers, and news broadcasts rather than in casual conversation.

How to use it

  • همچنین لازم است تمام فرم‌ها را امضا کنید. (hamchenin lâzem ast tamâm form-hâ râ emzâ konid) “Likewise, all forms must be signed.”
  • نتایج تحقیق منتشر شد. همچنین داده‌های جدید معرفی گردید. (natâyej tahghigh montashar shod. hamchenin dâde-hâye jadid mo’arrefi gardid) “The research results were published. Likewise, new data were introduced.”
  • همچنین باید به نکات فرهنگی توجه داشت. (hamchenin bâyad be nokât-e farhangi tavajjoh dâsht) “One must also pay attention to cultural points.”
  • رئیس شرکت سخنرانی کرد و همچنین از کارمندان تشکر کرد. (ra’is-e sherkat sokhanrani kard o hamchenin az kârmandân tashakkor kard) “The company director gave a speech and also thanked the employees.”

Cultural note

همچنین is one of the markers of formal register in Persian, and its use signals education and professionalism. In formal correspondence, Iranians often begin a second paragraph with همچنین to add a related point, much like “furthermore” in English. Switching to همینطور (hamintor) in a business email would sound out of place, while using همچنین in casual texting might get a laugh from friends.
