What it means
گلبرگ (golbarg) means a petal: one of the individual, usually colorful parts that make up the head of a flower. It is a compound of two pure Persian words: گل (gol), meaning flower, and برگ (barg), meaning leaf. Together they literally mean flower-leaf. In formal and scientific contexts, گلبرگ is the standard term. In casual speech, Iranians sometimes describe petals simply using برگ or descriptive phrases, but گلبرگ is well understood at all registers.
How to use it
- گلبرگهای رز ریخته بود رو زمین. (golbarg-hâye roz rikhte bud ru zamin.) “The rose petals had fallen on the ground.”
- اون گلبرگ رو از گل جدا کرد. (un golbarg ro az gol jodâ kard.) “She pulled a petal off the flower.”
- گلبرگها خیلی نازکن. (golbarg-hâ kheyli nâzokan.) “Petals are very delicate.”
- بوی گلبرگها پیچیده بود تو هوا. (buye golbarg-hâ pichide bud tu havâ.) “The scent of the petals had spread through the air.”
Cultural note
Rose petals (گلبرگهای گل محمدی) have a long history in Iranian culture, used to make golab (rose water), which is an essential ingredient in Persian cuisine, sweets, and religious ceremonies. The distillation of rose water in Kashan, especially from the Damask rose, has been practiced for centuries. Scattered petals are also a traditional way of welcoming honored guests.
