What it means
فوتسال (futsâl) refers to futsal, a form of association football played indoors on a hard court with five players per side and a smaller, heavier ball that bounces less than a standard football. The word entered Persian from the international sporting term “futsal,” which itself originates from the Portuguese phrase futebol de salão, meaning “hall football.” The exact route into Persian, whether directly from Portuguese or via the international sporting community, is not documented with certainty. While فوتبال (futbâl) is the outdoor game, فوتسال is specifically the indoor discipline with its own rules and governing body.
How to use it
- تیم فوتسال ایران قهرمان آسیاست. (Tim-e futsâl-e Irân ghahremân-e Âsiyâst.) “Iran’s futsal team is the champion of Asia.”
- هفتهای یه بار فوتسال بازی میکنم. (Haftei ye bâr futsâl bâzi mikonam.) “I play futsal once a week.”
- سالن فوتسال نزدیک خونهمونه. (Sâlon-e futsâl nazdik-e khunemoneh.) “The futsal hall is close to our house.”
- فوتسال سریعتر از فوتباله. (Futsâl sari’tar az futbâleh.) “Futsal is faster than football.”
Cultural note
Iran has a remarkably strong futsal tradition. The Iranian national futsal team has won the AFC Futsal Asian Cup multiple times and has consistently ranked among the top teams in Asia. Because indoor courts are more accessible year-round than outdoor pitches in many Iranian cities, futsal is a genuinely popular recreational and competitive sport, particularly among young urban players. Many professional Iranian footballers first honed their skills on the futsal court.
