What it means
فستیوال (festivâl) is a direct borrowing from European languages, most likely French “festival” or English “festival,” and refers to any organized arts or cultural celebration: a film festival, a music festival, a poetry festival, or a cultural fair. The word is fully naturalized in modern Persian and used by all generations. There is a native Persian alternative, جشنواره (jashnvâre), which is also widely used and preferred in more formal or official contexts, particularly by broadcasters and government bodies. In everyday speech, فستیوال and جشنواره are often interchangeable.
How to use it
- فستیوال فیلم فجر خیلی مشهوره. (festivâl-e film-e fajr kheili mashhure.) “The Fajr Film Festival is very famous.”
- امسال میری فستیوال موسیقی؟ (emsâl miri festivâl-e musighi?) “Are you going to the music festival this year?”
- بلیت فستیوال رو زود بگیر. (belit-e festivâl ro zud begir.) “Get your festival ticket early.”
- توی اون فستیوال خیلی فیلم خوب دیدم. (tu un festivâl kheili film-e khub didam.) “I saw a lot of good films at that festival.”
Cultural note
The Fajr International Film Festival, held annually in February in Tehran, is the most prominent film festival in Iran and one of the largest in the Middle East. It was founded in 1982, shortly after the Islamic Revolution, and has since served as the main showcase for Iranian cinema. Iran also hosts music and theater festivals throughout the year. The existence of both فستیوال and its Persian calque جشنواره reflects Iran’s ongoing negotiation between international cultural vocabulary and linguistic purism promoted by the Academy of Persian Language and Literature.
