What it means
بسکتبال (bâsketbâl) means basketball, the team sport in which two teams of five players each try to score by throwing a ball through the opponent’s raised hoop. The word is a straightforward phonetic borrowing from English “basketball” and has been in use in Persian since the sport spread to Iran in the twentieth century. In casual speech you might also hear simply بسکت (bâsket) as a shortened form among younger speakers.
How to use it
- بسکتبال بازی کردن به قد بلند کمک میکنه. (Bâsketbâl bâzi kardan be ghad-e boland komak mikoneh.) “Playing basketball helps you grow taller.”
- دیروز مسابقه بسکتبال داشتیم. (Diruz mosâbeghe-ye bâsketbâl dâshtim.) “We had a basketball match yesterday.”

Cultural note
Basketball gained a foothold in Iran through schools and university sports programs during the mid-twentieth century. The sport has a dedicated following, and the Basketball Iran Super League attracts competitive domestic club play. The Iranian national basketball team has participated in FIBA Asia Cup competitions and continues to develop younger talent through a growing grassroots system. Outdoor and indoor courts can be found in parks and schools across most Iranian cities.
