What it means
آسیا (Âsiyâ) is the Persian name for the continent of Asia. The word entered Persian via the Greek “Asia,” which the ancient Greeks used for the lands to their east, beginning with Anatolia. The ultimate root may go back further, possibly to Akkadian or Assyrian terms for the east, though the precise origin remains debated among scholars. In modern Persian, آسیا is used in geography, news, and conversation to refer to the Asian continent as a whole, and the adjective آسیایی (Âsiyâyi) means Asian. Iran itself is part of western Asia, sometimes referred to in Persian as آسیای غربی (Âsiyâ-ye Gharbi).
How to use it
- ایران توی آسیاست. (Irân tuy-e Âsiyâst.) “Iran is in Asia.”
- آسیا پرجمعیتترین قاره دنیاست. (Âsiyâ por-jam’iyat-tarin qâre-ye donyâst.) “Asia is the most populous continent in the world.”
- غذاهای آسیایی طرفدار زیادی دارن. (Ghazâhâ-ye Âsiyâyi tarafdâr-e ziâdi dâran.) “Asian foods have a lot of fans.”
- بازیهای آسیایی یه رویداد ورزشی بزرگه. (Bâzihâ-ye Âsiyâyi ye ruydâd-e varzeshi bozorge.) “The Asian Games are a major sporting event.”
Cultural note
Iran sits at the crossroads of western and central Asia, and Iranians generally identify strongly with the Asian continent in sporting and political contexts, participating in the Asian Football Confederation and the Asian Games. The breadth of Asia as a concept, spanning from Turkey to Japan, means the word آسیا is often modified in Persian: آسیای میانه (Central Asia), آسیای شرقی (East Asia), and آسیای جنوبی (South Asia) are all common phrases in news and education.
