What it means
تنیس (tenis) means tennis, the racket sport played on a rectangular court in which players hit a felt ball over a net. The word entered Persian from either English “tennis” or French “tennis,” both of which trace back to the Old French imperative tenez, meaning “take” or “receive,” shouted by the server. Wiktionary documents Persian as a descendant of both the English and French branches, and the exact route into the language has not been confirmed. Unlike many modern sports terms in Persian that arrived clearly through English, تنیس may have reached educated Iranian speakers through French cultural channels, though this cannot be stated with certainty. A related term is تنیس روی میز (tenis-e ru-ye miz), meaning table tennis or ping-pong.

Cultural note
Tennis in Iran has historically been associated with upper-middle-class and elite social circles, played at private clubs in Tehran and other major cities. The sport received broader attention when Iranian-born players began competing internationally. After the 1979 Revolution, access to tennis facilities went through periods of restriction, but the sport has since been re-established with active clubs and national federations for both men and women.
