What it means

فیلتر شکن (filter-shekan) is the daily-life word for any tool that gets around Iran’s internet blocks. Literally it means filter-breaker, from فیلتر (filter, the loanword for state censorship of websites) and شکن (shekan, breaker, from the verb شکستن, shekastan, to break). A VPN is a filter-shekan. A proxy is a filter-shekan. An app that quietly tunnels your traffic is a filter-shekan. The word covers the whole category, and most Iranians use it without thinking about its component parts.

How central it is

Surveys from 2023 and 2024 put filter-shekan use among Iranian internet users somewhere north of 70 percent. Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, the App Store, large parts of GitHub, and countless news sites all sit behind the filter. Functioning online without a filter-shekan is impossible for most Iranians under 40. Installing one is the first thing many new phone owners do after setting up the SIM. Even ordering food, banking, and looking up medical information often route through filter-shekans because the underlying services or their APIs are blocked.

The brand names

People talk about filter-shekan by product. Lantern, Psiphon, Cyberguard, Hotspot Shield, and dozens of smaller paid services circulate constantly. Telegram channels selling subscriptions move thousands of users a day. Reliability shifts week to week as the state tightens or relaxes its blocks, and Iranians become amateur experts in switching between services. The crackdowns of 2024 and 2025 narrowed which tools work, with several previously-stable services going dark for days at a time, but the demand has not moved. If anything, it has grown.

Where the word comes from

Filter-shekan is a hybrid word. فیلتر is a European loan that entered Persian through the technical vocabulary of the 1990s internet, then specialized in the 2000s to mean state web-blocking specifically. شکن is native Persian, the agent stem of شکستن. The compound is pure Iranian internet Persian: no Iranian outside the country would coin it, and no learner would predict it from a textbook. It is one of the most useful words in the modern vocabulary, and one that did not exist in any meaningful sense before 2009.
