What it means
شبکه خصوصی (shabakeh-ye khosusi) means “private network” and is used interchangeably with VPN (ویپیان, vipian) in Persian digital conversation. شبکه comes from the Arabic shabaka, meaning net or network, and خصوصی comes from the Arabic khuṣūṣ, meaning private or exclusive. Both roots entered Persian through Arabic, making the compound Arabic in origin. The full technical phrase is شبکه خصوصی مجازی (shabakeh-ye khosusi-ye majâzi), the direct translation of “virtual private network,” though in speech Iranians almost always say ویپیان or فیلترشکن (filter-breaker).

- بدون شبکه خصوصی نمیتونم اینستاگرام باز کنم. (bedune shabakeh-ye khosusi nemitunam instagramm bâz konam.) “Without a VPN I can’t open Instagram.”

Cultural note
Because Iran has one of the highest rates of internet filtering in the world, VPN use is extraordinarily widespread among the Iranian public. Apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and many news sites require a VPN to access from inside Iran, and surveys suggest the majority of internet users employ one regularly. Despite the official term شبکه خصوصی مجازی, most Iranians simply say فیلترشکن in everyday speech, a colorful native coinage meaning “filter-breaker.” The more formal شبکه خصوصی appears mainly in IT settings and official documents.
