What it means
ادامه دادن (edâme dâdan) means to continue, to carry on, or to keep going. The noun ادامه (edâme) comes from Arabic, built on the root د-و-م (d-w-m) meaning to last or to persist. The light verb دادن (dâdan), meaning to give, is pure Persian and forms the active transitive frame here: you “give continuation” to something. Its counterpart ادامه داشتن (edâme dâshtan, to have continuation) describes a state rather than an action, so it means to be ongoing or to last. In formal writing you may see ادامه یافتن (edâme yâftan) for a more elevated register. The construction is fully standard across all speech levels, equally at home in a text message and in a formal report.
How to use it
- به کارت ادامه بده (be kâr-et edâme bede) “Keep at your work / carry on with what you were doing.”
- جلسه تا شب ادامه داشت (jalase tâ shab edâme dâsht) “The meeting went on until evening.”
- میخوای ادامه بدی؟ (mikhây edâme bedi?) “Do you want to keep going?”
- داستان ادامه داره (dâstân edâme dâre) “The story continues.”
Cultural note
The phrase ادامه بده (edâme bede, keep going) is one of the most common encouraging words a Persian teacher or coach uses. In Iranian classroom culture, where recitation and oral performance are central, a teacher saying ادامه بده signals that the student is on the right track and should keep speaking. It carries a warmer, more personal tone than a simple “continue” in English, because the dâdan (giving) frame implies the speaker is offering their effort as a kind of gift.
