What it means
دل به دریا زدن (del be daryâ zadan) literally “to cast the heart to the sea.” Figuratively, it means to take a brave leap, commit fully to a risky decision after long hesitation, or finally jump in.
How to use it
- دل به دریا زدم و رفتم (del be daryâ zadam o raftam) “I took the leap and went”
- دلتو بزن به دریا (delet-o bezan be daryâ) “Just go for it”
- بالاخره دلش رو زد به دریا (belakhare delesh-o zad be daryâ) “He finally took the plunge”
The literal meaning
You take your heart, the seat of fear and longing in Persian psychology, and throw it into the sea. Once it’s in the water, there’s no taking it back. You commit.
The figurative meaning
Quitting a stable job for a risky venture, proposing marriage, immigrating, finally confronting a parent. Any decision where the speaker has been frozen by doubt and finally chooses to act.
When you’d say it
A friend has been agonizing for months about leaving Iran for graduate school abroad. They finally book the ticket. You text: دلتو زدی به دریا، آفرین.
Cultural note
This idiom carries warmth and approval. The دریا (sea) in Persian poetry symbolizes the unknown, the divine, fate. Throwing your heart into it is a beautiful surrender, not recklessness. You’ll hear it from supportive friends, never from naysayers.
