What it means
در حالی که (dar hâli ke) means “while,” “whereas,” or “even though” depending on context. حال (hâl) comes from Arabic حال, meaning “condition” or “state.” The Persian frame در (dar) and که (ke) wrap it into a subordinating conjunction. It serves two distinct functions: temporal (two actions happening at the same time) and contrastive (highlighting a contradiction between two facts). In the contrastive sense it is close to the English “whereas” or “yet.” A simpler synonym for the temporal sense is وقتی که (vaqti ke, “when/while”), but در حالی که is preferred in formal and written Persian.
