What it says
چشمم آب نشد (cheshmam âb nashod) is a colloquial Tehrani idiom that means “I am not impressed.” Literally it says “my eye did not melt.” Iranians use it to brush off something that was supposed to dazzle them and didn’t.
The literal meaning
Word for word: چشم (cheshm) eye, م (-am) my, آب (âb) water, نشد (nashod) did not become. “My eye did not become water.” The image is strange in English but tidy in Persian. The eye is the organ of seeing, the seat of admiration. When something amazes you, in Persian metaphor your eye softens, melts, becomes water. To say the eye did not melt is to say the supposed wonder produced no wonder at all. The eye stayed solid, dry, unmoved.
The figurative meaning
The speaker is unimpressed. Often the phrase carries a small smirk. A coworker shows off a project, a relative brags about a new car, a friend describes a date who is supposedly perfect, and the listener says چشمم آب نشد. The attempt to impress missed the mark. The phrase is dry rather than rude. It can be playful between friends, sharper between rivals. It is also self-aware: the speaker admits they were watching, expecting to be impressed, and just weren’t. There is something honest about it. The eye reports back, and the report is no.

Related expressions
The idiom belongs to a small family of eye-and-water expressions. چشمم روشن (cheshmam roshan) “my eye is bright” is the sarcastic cousin, used when someone disappoints you. به چشم نیومد (be cheshm nayumad) “it didn’t catch the eye” is a softer way of saying the same thing. تحت تأثیر قرار نگرفتم (tahte ta’sir gharâr nagereftam) is the formal-register version, “I was not affected.” In English the closest neighbors are “I’m not buying it,” “I’m not impressed,” and the slightly older “my heart didn’t skip.” The Persian version is a little more visual because it pictures a specific organ refusing to react.
