What it means
روشن (rowshan) means lit, bright, light-colored, or clear. It descends from Middle Persian rōšn and ultimately from Old Iranian roots related to light. The word applies to a lit room, a bright color, or a clear and understandable explanation. As the direct opposite of تاریک (târik, dark), rowshan is one of the most fundamental adjectives in the language. A very close synonym for mental clarity is واضح (vâzeh), borrowed from Arabic, but rowshan covers both physical and abstract senses in a single word.

روشن and its derivatives carry cultural weight in Persian beyond their literal meaning. روشنفکر (rowshanfekr, literally bright-thinker) is the standard word for an intellectual or enlightened person, and روشنگری (rowshangari) translates the concept of Enlightenment. These compounds show how deeply the metaphor of light equals knowledge is embedded in the Persian language. In poetry, the brightness of the beloved’s face or a candle flame is one of the most recurring images in classical ghazal poetry, where روشن frequently appears as both a literal description and a spiritual symbol.
