Today Bonyâd-e Mostaz'afân controls hundreds of companies in tourism (large hotel chains), food production (sugar, dairy, edible oils), transport (Iran's largest shipping company at one stage), cement, construction, agriculture, and chemicals. It owns commercial real estate across Iranian cities, including some of Tehran's largest office buildings and shopping centers. Its budget is set internally, its accounts are not subject to parliamentary oversight, and its president is appointed directly by the Supreme Leader.
