Mostaz'af literally means one who has been made weak. The Quran uses it for the oppressed whom God will raise up. Khomeini reframed it in 1979 as a revolutionary class label opposed to the mostakberin (the arrogant rich). The Foundation of the Oppressed (Bonyâd-e Mostaz'afân) sits on Pahlavi-era confiscated assets and claims to act on the mostaz'afin's behalf.
