Mostaz'af literally means one who has been made weak. The Quran uses it for the oppressed whom God will raise up. Khomeini reframed it in 1979 as a revolutionary class label opposed to the mostakberin (the arrogant rich). The Foundation of the Oppressed (Bonyâd-e Mostaz'afân) sits on Pahlavi-era confiscated assets and claims to act on the mostaz'afin's behalf.
The label is rhetorical. State media calls Friday prayer crowds mostaz'afin and protesters foreign-backed mobs. Bonyâd-e Mostaz'afân, nominally a charity, is one of the largest holding companies in Iran and runs hotels, factories, and farmland. The word lends moral cover to opaque political and economic power.
Reading mostaz'af without context is reading a religious word. Reading it inside Iranian state discourse is reading a frame: whatever the regime does is on behalf of the oppressed, whoever opposes the regime opposes the oppressed. We document the frame so learners can see it when it is deployed.
Mostaz'af appears in Friday sermons, school textbooks, Supreme Leader speeches, and the names of major institutions. The Quranic register hides the political work the word does. Naming the gap lets learners read past the surface.
مستضعف (mostaz’af) is Arabic for one who has been made weak, with the plural mostaz’afin (the oppressed). The Quran uses the term for the downtrodden whom God promises to raise up. Khomeini in 1979 picked it up and built a revolutionary class category around it: the mostazafin were the legitimate base of the Islamic Revolution, set against the mostakberin (the arrogant, the rich, the foreign-backed). Forty years later the word still does the same job. The Foundation of the Oppressed (Bonyâd-e Mostazafan) controls assets seized from the Pahlavi elite. State media frames every regime supporter as a mostaz’af; every dissident as a beneficiary of the old order or a foreign agent. The frame survives because it works.
