What it means
آزاد (âzâd) is one of the core pure Persian words for freedom. As an adjective it means free in the full range of senses: politically free, personally unrestrained, not imprisoned, not busy, and even free of charge in some contexts. The verb آزاد کردن (âzâd kardan) means to free, to release, or to liberate, and آزاد شدن (âzâd shodan) means to be freed or to become free. When someone asks آزادی؟ (âzâdi?) they are asking whether you are free right now, meaning available or unoccupied, not making a philosophical point. The abstract noun آزادی (âzâdi) means freedom or liberty and appears constantly in political speech, song lyrics, and everyday conversation.

- امشب آزادی؟ (emshab âzâdi?) “Are you free tonight?”
- زندانی رو آزاد کردن (zendâni ro âzâd kardan) “They released the prisoner.”
- آزاد باش (âzâd bâsh) “Be free / Do as you wish.”
- ورودش آزاده (vorudash âzâde) “Entry is free / open to all.”
Cultural note
آزادی carries enormous emotional weight in Persian-speaking cultures. It is the word carved into protest slogans, sung in national anthems, and written into poetry from Hafez to contemporary rap. One of Tehran’s main public squares is named میدان آزادی (Meydân-e Âzâdi, Freedom Square), topped by the Azadi Tower, built in 1971. For Iranians the word connects personal autonomy, national aspiration, and a long literary tradition of longing for freedom, which means even casual uses of آزادی in conversation carry a faint echo of that larger history.
