What it means
اصلی (asli) means main, original, principal, or authentic. It is formed from the Arabic noun اصل (asl), meaning root, origin, or foundation, plus the Persian adjectival suffix ـی (-i). The Arabic root أ-ص-ل (a-s-l) carries the idea of something’s fundamental source or genuine nature, and اصلی inherits that sense in Persian: the main entrance is the original, foundational way in; the original version is the authentic one, not a copy. In everyday speech اصلی is attached to many nouns to signal primacy or authenticity: ورودی اصلی (varudi-ye asli, main entrance), نسخه اصلی (noskhe-ye asli, original version), مشکل اصلی (moshkel-e asli, the main or root problem). A close synonym for the authentic sense is واقعی (vâghe’i, real, genuine).

- ورودی اصلی کجاست؟ (varudi-ye asli kojâst?) “Where is the main entrance?”
- این نسخه اصلیه یا کپیه؟ (in noskhe-ye aslieh yâ kopieh?) “Is this the original or a copy?”
- مشکل اصلی اینه که وقت نداریم (moshkel-e asli ine ke vaght nadârim) “The main problem is that we don’t have time.”
- جاده اصلی بستهست (jâde-ye asli bastast) “The main road is closed.”
Cultural note
The question اصلیه یا تقلبیه؟ (is it original or fake?) is a familiar part of Iranian market culture, where the distinction between an اصلی product and a قلابی (ghalâbi, counterfeit) or تقلبی (taghallobi, fake) one is commercially and socially significant. From brand-name goods in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar to software licenses, Iranians navigate a market where fakes are common and the word اصلی on a label or in a seller’s pitch carries weight, even if it sometimes needs verification.
