What it means
در اصل (dar asl) translates as “originally,” “fundamentally,” or “actually” depending on context. The word اصل (asl) comes from Arabic, where it means “root” or “origin.” The preposition دَر (dar) is pure Persian. Together they form a compound discourse marker that signals you are about to state the essential truth of something. It often introduces a clarification or a gentle correction. A close equivalent in function is در واقع (dar vâghe), meaning “in fact,” though در اصل tends to emphasize origin or basic nature rather than reality.
How to use it
- در اصل این ایده مال من بود. (Dar asl in ide mâl-e man bud.) “Actually, this idea was mine.”
- در اصل اون فیلم ایرانیه، نه ترکی. (Dar asl oon film irâniye, na torki.) “Originally that film is Iranian, not Turkish.”

Cultural note
Persian speakers use در اصل as a polite softener when correcting someone or redirecting a conversation. Rather than bluntly saying someone is wrong, inserting در اصل before your point lets the other person save face.
