What it means
بله (bale) means “yes.” It is the formal/polite affirmative, the version you reach for when answering a phone, an elder, a stranger, or anyone you want to show respect to.
The casual counterpart is آره (âre), used among friends and family.
How to use it
- بله، درسته (bale, doroste) “Yes, that’s right”
- بله، خودم هستم (bale, khodam hastam) “Yes, this is me (on the phone)”
- بله قربان (bale ghorbân) “Yes sir/ma’am” (very formal)
Position in sentence
Bale stands alone as a full reply, or opens a sentence followed by a comma. It never sits mid-sentence. Stretching it to بلهههه (baleeee) sounds sarcastic, the verbal equivalent of “yeah, sure.”
Cultural note
Picking up the phone with بله is the default in Iran. Saying آره to an unknown caller reads as rude or unprofessional. In a shop, a hotel, or any service setting, bale is the safe choice. Switch to âre only once you’ve clocked the register as casual.
