What it means
پریود (periyod) is a loanword from French période (or its English cognate period), meaning the menstrual period. It entered Persian through modern medical and cultural contact and is now the dominant colloquial term across Iran and the diaspora, favored over the formal قاعدگی (qâ’edegi) in everyday speech. The word is used freely in conversation among friends, family, and in informal health discussions. There is no meaningful difference in meaning between periyod and qâ’edegi, only a sharp difference in register: periyod is casual, qâ’edegi is clinical or written.
